DIR® Floortime
An approach that supports interaction, play and emotional regulation through a relationship built by following the child’s own interest.
Joining the Child’s World on Their Own Ground
DIR® Floortime supports development through a relationship built by following the child’s interest. It is not an adult-directed programme; whatever the child is interested in, the therapist gets down beside them — often onto the floor — and begins the interaction there. At Trea Kids this approach is carried out alongside physiotherapy goals and within a certified practice framework.
The Three Foundations
- D (Developmental): Supporting development step by step, in sequence
- I (Individual differences): Each child’s own sensory profile
- R (Relationship-based): Learning happens within a secure relationship
When Does It Help?
- Difficulty with reciprocal interaction and joint attention
- Sensory sensitivity or low responsiveness
- Play skills that remain limited for the child’s age
- Difficulty with turn-taking, imitation and social communication
- Difficulty regulating emotions
What Happens in a Session?
Sessions begin on the floor, with the game the child chooses. The therapist enters the play without disrupting it, creating small obstacles and moments of curiosity that encourage the child to open and close circles of communication. Over time these circles grow longer; the child builds longer, more complex and more enjoyable interactions.
Family participation is an inseparable part of this approach; a few short Floortime moments a day at home are the strongest predictor of progress.
What you may be wondering
We answer the questions on your mind with confidence, so parents can feel at ease.
Which age group does Trea Kids work with?
Trea Kids is a paediatric neurorehabilitation centre specialised in children aged 0–12. Because intervention is far more effective in early childhood, priority is given to the 0–6 age group.
How long does intensive therapy last?
Our intensive therapy programmes are usually planned over 3 to 6 weeks, with sessions of 1 to 2 hours, five days a week. The duration and intensity are set according to the child’s needs following the assessment.
What is TheraTogs and can every child use it?
TheraTogs is a wearable therapy garment that supports a child’s posture and movement control. It is not suitable for every child; suitability is decided after an initial assessment and the system is adjusted individually.
Can families take part in the therapy process?
Absolutely. Family involvement is very important at Trea Kids. We give feedback about the sessions, suggest supportive activities to do at home and make the family an active part of the process.
Is an assessment carried out before the sessions?
Yes. Before any of our services, the child’s physical, emotional and developmental status is assessed in detail. Goals are set and the therapy plan is built on the results of that assessment.
