Fine Motor Skills and Functional Hand Use

A programme addressing grasp, hand-eye coordination and two-handed use together with trunk stability.

Fine Motor Skills and Functional Hand Use

Using the Hands Is the Key to Independence

Fine motor skills cover the controlled use of the hand and fingers — from holding a pencil to fastening a button, from using a spoon to assembling a toy. These skills develop not through finger strength alone, but together with shoulder and trunk stability, hand-eye coordination and sensory feedback. Our programme targets that whole.

When Do We Recommend an Assessment?

  • Difficulty grasping, releasing or transferring objects between hands
  • Weak pencil grasp and drawing skills for the child’s age
  • Markedly little use of one hand
  • Difficulty with tools such as spoon, fork and scissors
  • Quick fatigue, tremor in the hand, low grip strength
  • Delay in dressing and personal care for the child’s age

What We Work On

  • Strengthening the shoulder girdle and trunk stability
  • Developing grasp patterns (palmar, fingertip, pincer)
  • Both hands working together and crossing the midline
  • Hand-eye coordination and visual-motor integration
  • In-hand manipulation and finger isolation
  • Preparing pre-writing skills

Learning Through Play

Sessions are built around activities the child enjoys — dough, beads, pegs, climbing and carrying afterwards. The level of difficulty increases gradually as the child succeeds, so motivation is preserved and the skill gained carries over into daily life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What you may be wondering

We answer the questions on your mind with confidence, so parents can feel at ease.

Which age group does Trea Kids work with?

Trea Kids is a paediatric neurorehabilitation centre specialised in children aged 0–12. Because intervention is far more effective in early childhood, priority is given to the 0–6 age group.

How long does intensive therapy last?

Our intensive therapy programmes are usually planned over 3 to 6 weeks, with sessions of 1 to 2 hours, five days a week. The duration and intensity are set according to the child’s needs following the assessment.

What is TheraTogs and can every child use it?

TheraTogs is a wearable therapy garment that supports a child’s posture and movement control. It is not suitable for every child; suitability is decided after an initial assessment and the system is adjusted individually.

Can families take part in the therapy process?

Absolutely. Family involvement is very important at Trea Kids. We give feedback about the sessions, suggest supportive activities to do at home and make the family an active part of the process.

Is an assessment carried out before the sessions?

Yes. Before any of our services, the child’s physical, emotional and developmental status is assessed in detail. Goals are set and the therapy plan is built on the results of that assessment.
